The Colorado Handyman builds custom outdoor living spaces and growing structures engineered for Colorado Springs' challenging high-altitude growing conditions — USDA Zone 5b, approximately 130 frost-free days (last frost around May 8, first frost around October 5), just 16 inches of annual rainfall, and intense UV that degrades standard greenhouse glazing within 2–3 seasons.

Walpini Sunken Greenhouses

A Walpini is a sunken greenhouse that uses the earth's natural geothermal mass for passive heating — making year-round vegetable growing possible in Colorado Springs without expensive heating systems. We dig 6–8 feet below grade (past the 36-inch El Paso County frost line) so earth walls maintain temperatures above 50°F even in January.

Standard Greenhouse Builds

Polycarbonate or glass greenhouses with UV-stabilized glazing rated for high-altitude exposure, automated ventilation systems, and concrete footings set below the 36-inch frost line to prevent heaving during Colorado's 100+ annual freeze-thaw cycles.

PPRBD Permit Thresholds

Detached accessory structures under 200 square feet supported directly on grade do not require a building permit — many of our greenhouse and raised bed projects fall within this threshold. Larger structures require a PPRBD permit, which we handle completely.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Walpini greenhouse and can you build one in Colorado Springs?+
A Walpini is a sunken greenhouse that uses geothermal mass for passive heating — making year-round growing possible in Zone 5b's ~130 frost-free days without supplemental heating. We dig 6–8 feet below grade (past the 36-inch El Paso County frost line) and use UV-stabilized polycarbonate glazing rated for high-altitude exposure. Walpini builds over 200 sq ft require a PPRBD permit; smaller builds on grade are permit-exempt.
Can you build a greenhouse that withstands Colorado Springs weather?+
Yes. All our greenhouse structures are engineered for 6,000+ feet — UV-stabilized glazing that won't yellow in 2–3 seasons, frost-line footings set below the 36-inch El Paso County frost line to prevent heaving, and wind bracing for properties in Black Forest and Falcon where gusts are greater.
Do I need a permit to build a greenhouse in Colorado Springs?+
Detached structures under 200 sq ft on grade: no permit required. Over 200 sq ft: PPRBD permit with plan review required. If your greenhouse includes electrical (fans, lighting, heated beds) or plumbing, a separate permit is required regardless of size. We handle the entire permitting process.
